You asked … about park furniture

Friends of Berczy Park volunteers installed furniture funded by members and local business donors in past summers.

A community member asks, “I miss the bright green tables and chairs that occupied Berczy Park in the past. Can’t we get more seating options in the new park?”

We answer: Don’t worry, the new park design includes moveable furniture, including metal tables and chairs like you see in many top parks and public plazas around the world, or like those on the typical Starbucks patio.

Our park designer was inspired in part by the bright green furniture installed by Friends of Berczy Park during past summers, including imagesbistro sets several years ago and Muskoka chairs installed during the 2015 Pan Am Games, purchased with donations from our members, local businesses and the St Lawrence Market Neighbourhood BIA.

The new permanent, moveable furniture should arrive by late June for everyone to enjoy the warmer weather around the fountain.

I often look at our park from my condo window to watch for changes and developments. Recently I have noticed an increase of doggie visitors – many of whom come with their owners to “poop” on the beautiful grassy area. I see almost no dogs visiting the “doggie” areas. Do you think it might be a good idea to have signs directing visitors to the proper areas?

Thanks Joy, yes it seems that the dogs really love the green grass. The City does plan some sort of signage to encourage pet owners to make more use of the gravel mural garden area. Also, as you may have seen, Friends of Berczy Park is hosting a series of Pet-lovers Days each month this summer to educate pet-owners about best behaviours in the park. We understand that dogs will always prefer the grass, but we are definitely trying to shift some of their activity to the mural garden. I personally do see pet-owners and their dogs using the mural garden fairly often but we can improve for certain.

When will the fencing on stairs be removed. Many dogs go on the plants and mulch. If the stairway was accessible the owners can easily take them up the stairs to the gravel. Big mistake to keep fencing up. Lots of dog poop not picked up on the mulch.

Hi Alba, very soon the steps will be open hopefully. The park contractor still has to add a ‘lip’ to the top and bottom of those steps so they are not a falling hazard. We’ve expressed the urgency of doing this soon to the City.
