You asked …. about skateboarders

16 Jan

a-skateboarder-jumpingA community member asks, “What can be done about skateboarders using the platform by the fountain to skateboard on? Is there a way we can stop it before they damage the wood?”

We answer, “Friends of Berczy Park has already reported this to the City (and we also encourage you to always report any troubling events or park damage by calling 3-11). The Parks, Forestry & Recreation Dept is currently working with the park designer to add a deterrent for skateboarders like a metal rail on the edge of the wooden stage. While it’s great to see youth using the park, we definitely don’t want the wooden structure to be damaged.”

New anti-skateboarding ‘knobs’ added to Berczy platforms.

Update on Feb 15, 2017: The City installed anti-skateboarding guard ‘knobs’ along the wooden platforms. They have been effective in other City parks so hopefully this will resolve the issue.

It was not only the platform. I witnessed about 7 kids using the long benches and skidding across them. Hopefully this behaviour will stop. It would be a shame to see damage to the new park.

Thanks for your prompt reply – hopefully the city will do something soon

As I look out the window on January 2, I see 8 young kids using the area and the platform as a skateboard park. Hopefully the city will do something before too much damage is done.

Hi Norma, you can help us keep nudging the City to act by calling 3-11 to complain and write to our city councillor pmcconn@toronto.ca. Pam McConnell’s staff are very responsive regarding park issues.

This has not been effective at all. You have created a concrete skateboard park. They use the benches without backs, the stage & the area around the tree. Yesterday, they had brought a wooden sign, which they left, to use as a ramp. Maybe if there was more grass, this wouldn’t be a problem. It is unfortunate that the park was turned into a concrete jungle. Now you have a problem that you will not be able to fix. Good luck getting this to stop. I see them there everyday.

Hi Laura, thanks for your comment – I can tell you care about our park too, although I’m not sure it’s helpful to use the accusatory ‘You have created…’ and ‘Now you have a problem.’ We are just a community group that tries to gather community input and care for the park. ‘We’ actually hauled away that wooden sign as soon as we heard about it to help address that issue. ‘We’ will continue to try to work with the City to address this issue. ‘We’ hope you’ll join us in trying to solve the problem, by reporting these incidents to 3-11 when you see them, by calling the non-emergency 51 Division police line (416-808-2222) if you see destruction of property, or diplomatically pointing out to the skateboarders what they are inadvertently doing to public property, if you feel safe doing so, without putting yourself at risk. Thanks again for your comments.
