Take part in Berczy design planning sessions

21 Jun

You can get involved in the next step in the renovation process for Berczy Park. As part of the BIA/8-80 Cities initiative to revamp Berczy, a series of ‘Visioning Workshops’ are scheduled, to gather input into future park improvements.

Sponsored by the St. Lawrence Market Neighbourhood BIA and 8-80 Cities, designers from renown Danish firm, Gehl Architects will explain the BIA/8-80 Cities project and run brainstorming sessions to collect ideas from community members.

The Visioning Workshops are the latest step in the project, following spring 2012 focus groups and data collection by 8-80 Cities, a non-profit group that supports public space design projects (See Feb 29 ‘Public Forum’ update below for details).

Following the workshops, Gehl Architects will prepare concepts for a revitalized Berczy (and a separate project for St. James Park). These plans will then be submitted for City and public review, and a park Master Plan will be prepared before actual renovations occur.

As a participant in this process, Friends of Berczy Park encourages everyone to attend a Visioning Workshop to make your voice heard.

Session dates:

  • Berczy Park: Wednesday, July 4th 12-5pm, Great Hall in St. Lawrence Hall;
  • Berczy Park: Wednesday, July 4th 7pm-9pm, Great Hall in St. Lawrence Hall;
  • St. James Park: Thursday, July 5th 12-5pm, Great Hall in St. Lawrence Hall;
  • St. James Park: Thursday, July 5th 7-9pm, Great Hall in St. Lawrence Hall;

Bold Mike Parsons mural coming to Berczy Park

14 Jun

To bring fresh life to Berczy Park – while we await longer-term City/BIA 8-80 Cities plans to redesign the park (see posts below) – Friends of Berczy Park has commissioned a vibrant sidewalk mural by high-profile Toronto artist Mike Parsons.

Mike Parsons, City and FOBP volunteers painting first layer of mural
on June 29th.

Inspired by children’s chalk drawings, the mural will create a playful kid’s zone, while adding to the artistic theme of Berczy, including the nearby Flatiron Building mural by Derek Michael Besant.

Supported by The City and the St. Lawrence Neighbourhood Business Improvement Association, and the hands-on support of Mike Parsons, the mural will come to life on Sunday July 1 (rain date July 20/22). *Note: this event was rescheduled from June 22/23 to finalize logistical details.

To help cover addition costs, FOBP welcomes donations to the project:

  • Make a pledge: $5, $10 or $20 will make a big difference. Write  BerczyPark@gmail.com to arrange your donation.
  • Purchase a Mike Parsons t-shirt: Stop by the mural painting event on Friday, June 29 (from noon) and Sunday, July 1 (starting at noon) and buy a shirt, with proceeds supporting the mural.
  • Pet-owners can include a furry friend in the mural. Just pledge $20-25, and e-mail us a pet photo, so that our star artist can immortalize your pet in the mural. See the post below ‘Let your pet make a mark…’ or write shaunpearen@hotmail.com to arrange it.

Thanks for your support!

Mike Parsons’ bold and edgy style captures urban life around us.
